NATO: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Since its establishment in 1949, NATO has grown to 32 countries with about 3.5 million personnel. The organization has been effective in multiple aspects through the decades, but its purpose and outlook are being tested. Which countries are living up to their membership obligations? What is the organization’s future if the United States significantly reduces support? How prepared is NATO for increasing technology innovation, such as artificial intelligence and unmanned aerial vehicles?
The Council welcomed Dr. John Manza to discuss these and other key issues. Dr. Manza is an authority on international security, alliance management, and the stabilization of fragile states. With a career spanning four decades across the U.S. Marine Corps, the U.S. Departments of State and Defense, and the highest levels of NATO leadership, he is a rare practitioner who has both designed global defense policy at the Pentagon, and executed it on the ground in the world’s most volatile regions.
